"A New Assignment"

Posted on Mon Jul 22nd, 2019 @ 9:49am by Lieutenant Rianna Repatha Thibideaux & Commander Curtis Thibideaux

806 words; about a 4 minute read

Mission: New Beginnings
Location: Various

It was a blessing for Rianna to finally get off SB 375. Sure it was home but she lived for the stars and the noisy engine room of a moving ship. On the shuttle ride over , she slept most of the way but once they neared the Obsidian Fleet's headquarters, she got up and peered out the window hoping to get a look at the Valiant. Finally she did see the Defiant class in all her splendor sitting in landing bay 94.

The excitement grew inside as the shuttle landed on landing pad 96. As the doors opened, Rianna almost ran from the shuttle to high tale it to landing bay 94 and her new charge, USS Valiant. Skidding to a halt just inside the landing bay she stopped short and just looked at her. This ship was a beautiful sight to behold and it was hers, well technally not hers but in one respect she was. The Valiant would be her lady to keep running and fix her when she was hurt, and hers to protect from harm. Maybe some didn't look at it that way but to her, like Sotty from the Enterprise, it was her lady.

Entering the Valiant, she headed directly to engineering and kissed the dormant warp core. 'You are brsutiful my kittens and I will keep you purring, I promise' she said softly. Then patting the bulkhead affectionately she commend the XO.

"Ltjg. Rianna Repatha to Commander Thibideaux, permission to report in directly to you", Rianna asked.

Walking into the Valiant's engine room, Curtis stopped short upon seeing a woman kissing the warp core. He was on the verge of calling security when she turned slightly and he recognized the Valiant's new Chief Engineer from the personnel file that had been forwarded that morning. As she turned and spoke, Curtis could only smile. "Well Lieutenant, I'm glad you two are getting to know each other," he said, indicating the warp core with a slight dip of his head.

"I'll absolutely note your presence aboard and we'll assign you quarters," he said. "The Captain will expect an introduction as well." Gesturing then around engineering, "If I remember from you file, you've considerable experience with smaller ships so you should feel right at home. The dock crew told me they've run tests but they haven't went in-depth into the Valiant's systems so you've got your work cut out for you."

"If she has the same problem with the engines like the USS Defiant had, it will be an easy fix, but I would have to fire up the core to be sure. Anything else will take a level 1 diagnostic to check each system visually. Starbase engineers are not the best in my books, apart from my father. Now there was an engineering officer, taught me right from the crib", Rianna said smiling.

"Well, you've a couple of base officers who have been assigned aboard that are top notch, so I expect a lot from your department, Lieutenant." Curtis grinned, "Begin your level one diagnostics on the priority systems: life support, propulsion, shields, tactical....you know the drill. It's going to take some time, but it's the only way to be sure we're sound. It won't all get done before we lift, but it'll help us to get to know her." Patting a nearby support strut, Curtis said "We'll all lend a hand as our duties allow."

'Well it would go much faster if I had my old crew here. They are a well oiled team and work smoothly and accurately and qjuick. However that part is up to you sir", Rianna stated.

Curtis thought about that, then said. "We might be able to get one, if they're available. I know a few people in Bu'Pers so get me a name and I'll talk it over with the Captain. However, you'd best proceed in making the people you have into another well oiled machine. There will be some long shifts, so we'll be all getting to know each other pretty well."

"I know who is available now", Rianna said. His name is Lt. Jason Corbin. He is the Mr. O'Brien of the Defiant class ships. I ought to know......I taught him myself."

Curtis nodded, "Right. I'll see what the Captain thinks and we'll go from there. Don't hold your breath, though." Glancing at his chrono, the XO said "And I have some other things I need to tend to. Unless you have something else for me, I'll let you get back to getting to know the Val."

"Thank you Commander. I will put a call in to Jason before we leave" Richelle said as shecwatched the XO leave her to finish getting acquainted with the heart of the Valiant.
