Doctor Doctor

556 words; about a 3 minute read

Mission: Prelude to War
Location: Sick bay, USS Valiant
Timeline: Days before leaving Port.

Rupert paced through the semi-empty corridors of Valiant. He was barefoot, wearing the tropical working uniform (uniform shirt and shorts) since they were still landed.

He stuck his head into the medical compartment and saw the doctor was indeed present and he stepped in, "Hello Doctor. I thought I'd stop in and see how things were going?"

Doctor Caine looked up from the medical inventory she was conducting, "Hello Commander. Things are adequate. As long as the wounded do not exceed my biobeds." she said rigidly. She was still trying to be less Borg-like and more "human". She looked at the Commander's attire, "I didn't realize that the uniform onboard was lacking in structure." raising an eyebrow.

"All perfect up to regulations, if slightly dated," Rhu commented. "Star ship's don't normally land on terrestrial objects. Plus, I'm the Captain and, as such, am never in the wrong."

He crossed his arms and leaned against the door frame and asked, "Only adequate? Or is that commentary on the size of the ship? If we're lacking in anything we're supposed to have getting after it sooner than later is better."

"yes sir. Adequate as this is not a galaxy class starship. As for lacking the answer would be space and medical staff. I will adapt." She said very dryly.

"That's likely the name of the game alright," Rhu replied, before repeating. "Adapt." "Our third officer is actually a Counselor and has medical training so he should be able to lend a hand when the feces hits the fly wheel. I'll be sure to hit Bu'Pers up for a nurse too. And there's always the holo-doc program."

Glancing around at the walls, he commented, "As to the space, I think we're stuck with what we have. Some will have to be treated and monitored in their bunks. If we need a big triage area, it's the mess hall or one of the shuttle bays."

Then he grinned. "Personally, I like it. A small ship tends to help build comradery quickly."

She raised an eyebrow, "You humans and your value of comradery and emotions... I will never understand," again dryly. A voice in her head, 'What will comradery do when the walls are covered in blood and bodies assimilated.' Closing her eyes a second and shaking her head, before looking back at the Captain.

"We do value such," Rhu told Kaitlynn. "Though I'm only half human, my Betazoid half would tell you an empathic connection with your patients is just as important as being clinically perfect. Even the EMH programs try to present a calming bedside nature."

Rhu smiled then, "Of course, the Vulcans would argue that a emotionless, clinical approach is preferable. But, they don't always make the best people doctors. Regardless, I'm sure the Valiants will grow on you."

She looked at his raising an eyebrow. "i will take your word for it sir. Are you aware that your physical is due in 2 months?"

Rhu's eyes took on a glint of humor as he asked her, "Is that a threat, doctor?"

Waving, Rhu continued. "Sign me up my next free rotation, Doctor. A ship's Commander has to lead the way. Let me know if you need anything." And with that, he turned and exited Sick Bay, his strides taking him onto his next task for the day.
